Beginning Friday, Delta Air Lines will begin using facial recognition technology at LAX.
That means the airline will install cameras to identify airline passengers at one of its boarding gates, according to a story in the Los Angeles Times.
In the last year, LAX has been testing facial recognition technology including a 90 day test period by American Airlines last winter that was indefinitely extended, according to the LA Times, and other boarding gates in Tom Bradley International Terminal.
The camera will be in the airline's Terminal 2 will be permanent, however, and is not a test.
The LA Time story said "The cameras use facial recognition technology to match the faces of departing travelers with images and names already collected by Customs and Border Patrol and other government agencies. If the name that corresponds to the image captured by the cameras is on the flight manifest, the passenger is allowed to board."
Meanwhile, critics say the use of facial recognition technology will violate the privacy of passengers.
