A Canadian grocery store decided to use old-school shaming strategies to eliminate single-use plastic bags.

When you're without your recycled bag, most stores will simply ask customers if you need one, but not East West Market in Vancouver, British Columbia. East West will give you a bag, but you might not want to walk around with it for long.

Shoppers are bag-shamed with plastic bags that read "Wart Ointment Wholesale," "Into the Weird Adult Video Emporium" or "The Colon Care Co-Op."

East West Market owner, David Lee Kwen told National Public Radio he designed the bags to encourage awareness of the importance of reducing consumption.

“The message is, we should make a conscious effort to save our planet one step at a time,” Kwen said. “[Plastic bags> are a big problem, and every step helps.”
