LOS ANGELES (KNX) — Los Angeles Police Department Chief Michel Moore said more than 1,300 employees at the department are either recovering from COVID-19 or in quarantine after being exposed to the virus.
The department noted that in the last two weeks, more than 735 officers and 225 members of the support staff tested positive for the virus, according to NBC 4 Los Angeles.
"We're looking at contingency plans now, and monitoring the high number of employees out of work," Moore said to the Board of Police Commissioners.
The new numbers come after the Los Angeles Times reported on Jan. 19 that there were more than 2,000 employees from the police department and the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department that were sick or quarantined at home after having tested positive for COVID-19.
