Metro's Board of Directors will meet on Thursday to discuss a motion that seeks to install barriers to protect drivers from passengers.

It comes amid violent attacks on the Metro system. On Monday, a 67-year-old woman was fatally stabbed on the Metro train in Studio City.  On April 13, a Metro bus driver in Santa Monica was attacked by a suspect who kicked in the glass door of the bus. Days prior, a passenger was stabbed on a Metro bus.

L.A. County Supervisor and Metro Board member Kathryn Barger told KNX News’ Jon Baird that more needs to be done to protect Metro operators and passengers.

“I believe we need to have more transit officers on our lines. I've been consistent with that,” she said. “It's not an either or with the ambassador program. It is an enhancement and it's a necessity and that alone is not gonna solve this. We have to address what's going on in our streets and that is mental illness.”

The suspects in Monday’s attack and the Santa Monica bus attack were arrested.

As a result of the fatal stabbing, LAPD Detective Meghan Aguilar told KNX News’ Margaret Carrero that the department is increasing its presence at the Universal City Metro station.
