Rebecca Grossman is set to be sentenced on Monday for a hit-and-run crash that killed two brothers in Westlake Village in 2020.

Prosecutors are seeking 34 years to life in prison, while Grossman’s attorneys are asking the judge for a little over 12 years in prison or probation.

In February, Grossman was convicted of second-degree murder and vehicular manslaughter in the deaths of Mark and Jacob Iskander.

City News Service reported that in a letter to the judge, Grossman wrote, “… I am not a murderer, and I ask you to recognize that true fact. My pain, my recognition of the pain the Iskanders suffer, and the pain I watch my family endure, are punishments that I already suffer and will for the rest of my life.”

On June 3, a judge rejected a motion for a new trial for Grossman. Grossman’s attorney, James Spertus, told reporters there wasn’t enough evidence at trial.

“She was involved in a terrible tragedy, a terrible accident and we hope the sentence reflects those circumstances,” he said. “The court has a lot of discretion at sentencing and we hope the court recognizes the mother and the human being that has been now convicted of murder and we are very optimistic that the Court of Appeals will recognize that the court based its decision on an interpretation of law, not fact, that we believe was wrong.”

Julie Cohen, who spoke on behalf of the boys’ parents last week, said the family is looking for this case to be over.

“Hopefully, we will after almost four years be out of this court system and begin the process of healing and doing good deeds in Mark and Jacob's name,” she said.

Grossman has been behind bars since the verdict.
