Simi Valley residents say Sandy Fire arrived quickly in their neighborhood

On Tuesday, crews continued knocking down hot spots in Simi Valley where the Sandy Fire destroyed a home on a cul-de-sac and prompted residents to evacuate.

KNX News’ Jon Baird spoke with a resident named Phil, who was shocked by how quickly the wind-driven flames roared up a canyon and destroyed a home on their block.

“Extremely smoky. Couldn't believe how quickly it came up,” he recalled. “It started at the water tank down below, and within two minutes, it was at the house right there.”

Ron Wechsler, another resident, said he watched his neighbor’s home burn.

“Their place was gone,” he said. “It was horrible to watch.”

He believes their neighborhood overall was saved because one property owner cleared out weeds on a five-acre parcel behind them just days before the fire erupted.
