CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — It's back to school time, and experts are confident that artificial intelligence will take a larger role in the classroom.
Shelly Palmer, CEO of the Palmer Group and a professor in residence at Syracuse University, said AI is no longer the future of education; it’s the present.
“We are going to see AI copilots everywhere in our world before the end of this year for sure,” Palmer said.
He said Microsoft and Google will introduce AI copilots into their office software, and Palmer added that the tech will drift into the classroom. When it does, it will be up to teachers to learn how it can be used.
“Because there’s not a student in the world who isn’t going to use a copilot to help them write,” he said.
Once humans develop a comfort level with AI in the classroom, though, he said it can be a partner for teachers and students.
“You can really get into some deep stuff with the language models that will make teaching a joy and learning a joy, too,” Palmer said. “So, yeah we’re going to be able to customize education to students.”
Specifically, Palmer said AI can help teachers craft tutoring programs that meet students on their level.
“It’s very difficult to exactly match your level of math skills [or] exactly match your level of English skills with the tutor that you’re working with,” he said. “That becomes incredibly easy with a large language model.”
