Any faculty, staff and students "accessing campus facilities" at California State University locations this fall will be required to be vaccinated for COVID-19, administration officials announced on Tuesday.
The school made the announcement amid "evolving circumstances" ahead of possible action from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Anyone impacted must certify their inoculation by Sept. 30, officials added.
"The current surge in COVID cases due to the spread of the highly infectious Delta variant is an alarming new factor that we must consider as we look to maintain the health and well-being of students, employees and visitors to our campuses this fall," Chancellor Joseph Castro said in a news release.
Students and employees are able to seek medical and religious exemptions.
Those wishing to get vaccinated at a campus facility are asked to contact their campus location for availability and appointments.
The CSU system is also offering "a more expansive offering of virtual courses" should students choose not to return to campus this fall, however some programs’ full course load won’t be available virtually.
