Gov. Newsom accused of 'dirty politics' in his attempt to ensure Prop 1 passes

It's been a couple of weeks since Super Tuesday in California, and we still do not know for sure what's gonna happen with Prop 1.

It's the ballot measure Governor Newsom heavily promoted that would set aside a lot of money to improve mental health treatment for veterans and homeless people in the state.

Monday, the governor was asked about the thin margin in favor of his measure but would only defer a response until after all the votes have been counted.

Last week, the 'No on Prop 1' campaign inexplicably conceded but has since withdrawn that concession.

Dave Fratello, a consultant for the group, told KNX News that the margin back then was 50,000 votes on the yes side, but "The count is down to 20,000 out of 7.5 million votes. We just didn't see that coming, but there was a wave of votes that came in last week that were much more favorable to the no side."

He says the PAC backing the governor is getting volunteers now to contact Democrats for the measure who had their votes rejected, and calls that 'dirty politics,' comparing it to Bush vs. Gore back in 2000.

"We're seeing a sleazy echo of that Florida effort here, with the governor trying to count only the votes of the people he thinks support him," said Fratello.

Fratello said 'two can play that game,' and the opposition group will be asking that all votes be reviewed.

The governor canceled his State of the State speech, which was meant to happen Monday, apparently because Prop 1's fate is still up in the air.
