FRISCO (1080 KRLD) - It's a shocking loss for the Frisco Police Department. After just over two years on the job, K-9 Officer Boris ended his watch on Wednesday.
Frisco Police Officer Radd Rotello said Boris, a 4 1/2-year-old Belgian Malinois, passed away from an undisclosed medical issue. "I don't know what happened specifically, but we are pretty broken up to have lost him," Rotello said.
Boris joined the Frisco PD in May 2017. Rotello said the K-9 assisted in 79 drug-related arrests, was used in more than 100 narcotics sniffs per year and was successful in six no-bite suspect apprehensions.
Boris was among the first K-9s to join the force in Frisco. Rotello said, "The program was fairly new when he came on, so really, a lot of the things we learned about having a K-9 officer came from Boris."
Rotello said Boris was also a star among the public. "He was always able to bring a smile to not just our faces, but to the faces of our community. And that's something that really draws us together and keeps Frisco the way it is," Rotello said.
A public ceremony to honor Boris is being planned for Monday, August 26. More details on the memorial will be released as they become available.
