DALLAS (1080 KRLD) - Everyone knows grocery store shelves can empty fast these days. That makes it especially hard for low-income women who depend on federal assistance to feed their kids.
Assistance payments come on the first of the month, so these first few days are when the moms are trying to buy the real necessities. Therefore, advocates have a big request for the rest of us.
Brian Dittmeier, from the National WIC Association says shortages are most apparent on nutritious staples like eggs, milk, vegetables, fruits and bread. And also infant formula.
Dittmeier is asking the rest of us to refrain from shopping - or to at least to lay off those staples - for these first three days of the month to leave something on the shelves for the kids.
WIC is the federal supplemental nutrition program for Women, Infants and Children.
