ALVARADO (1080 KRLD) - Alvarado ISD has canceled class for the rest of the week because an adult with students at Alvarado Elementary North is in self-quarantine for coronavirus.
Superintendent Kenneth Estes says students who are family members of that person have started showing symptoms.
"In consultation with the Johnson County Health Officer and the Texas Department of State Health Services, Alvarado ISD will be closed for the rest of this week," Estes wrote in a statement.
The district had also canceled class Wednesday, saying the adult was exposed to the virus while working at a doctor's office. That case of coronavirus has not been confirmed, but the district says a medical employee was exposed to the virus, and it is taking additional steps to prevent the spread among students and staff.
Alvarado ISD is on spring break next week. Classes are scheduled to resume March 23.
"We appreciate your understanding in this fluid situation. We will continue to communicate updates as new information becomes available," Estes wrote. "The safety of our students and staff is paramount in every decision made by Alvarado ISD."
