FORT WORTH (1080 KRLD) - A Central Texas girl who contracted a very rare brain-eating amoeba is fighting for her life in Fort Worth.
Lily Mae Avant took a swim in the Brazos River on Sunday; and a short time later, the symptoms started.
She started having a headache and a fever. From there, her condition rapidly worsened to the point where she became incoherent and unresponsive.
Her parents rushed her to a hospital, and she was eventually airlifted to Cook Children's Medical Center.
There, the family found out that Lily Mae had contracted primary amoebic meningoencephalitis. The amoeba is very aggressive - it normally kills people within five days of infection.
On the #Lilystrong Facebook page, the administrators says God is in control now. Doctors say there is nothing more they can do for her at this point.
