MELISSA (1080 KRLD) - A little girl is recovering after getting attacked by the family pet.

Police say the 10-year-old child was playing with her family's newly adopted dog Tuesday night, when it suddenly sank its teeth into her arm.

"And it wouldn't let go. So the family started trying to get him off,"said Roger Thornhill, Assistant Chief of the Melissa Police Department. "And he got more aggressive."

The family continued struggling with the animal, eventually stabbing it in the back to get it off the child. She was CareFlighted from her home in Dove Crossing to the hospital with serious injuries.

Thornhill says he believes the pet was a newly adopted bulldog. It was removed by animal services and police say it's in stable condition.
