DALLAS (KRLD) - Dallas Animal Services is offering an adoption special through Sunday to help clear the shelter of hundreds of dogs. They're trying to make room for an influx of new animals they expect during the Halloween weekend.

"Our biggest need right now is medium and large dogs, 30 pounds and up, which we're having space issues with right now," said manager Whitney Hanson with Dallas Animal Services. The shelter is already over its capacity for adoptable medium and large dogs and is expecting another 400 to arrive in the next few days.

Halloween is the second-busiest time of year at the shelter for lost pets, right behind the 4th of July. "Doors are going to be opening and closing more often, there's going to be strangers at your house, you might be in costume," said Hanson. "There are a lot of things that can really scare pets." She's encouraging pet owners to keep their animals in a crate or separate room this evening to reduce the chance that they'll get scared and run off.

To make room for animals that do get loose over the next few days, Dallas Animal Services is offering a free adoption special through Sunday on all pets at its main location at 1818 N. Westmoreland Road in Dallas. The free adoption special is also being offered at the PetSmart Everyday Adoption Center at 16821 North Coit Road in Dallas.

Dallas Animal Services is also seeking temporary foster families for pets. They're holding an orientation session on Sunday but staffers are also available for one-on-one foster orientation sessions before then.

Details on the requirements to adopt a pet are on the Dallas Animal Services web site <www.dallasanimalservices.org>
