DALLAS (1080 KRLD) - As we get closer to the end of the school year and traditional milestones for high school seniors are cancelled, the Dallas School district is announcing a plan for virtual commencement ceremonies.
The Dallas School district says it's the only way to provide the safest and most secure environments for students, families and staff.
"We tried everything we could to have a traditional graduation, but unfortunately this virus took us down on that effort" said Dallas ISD Superintendent Dr. Michael Hinojosa.
He says there are 37 high schools, and nearly 9,000 students, and they plan to honor every graduating student. The ceremonies will be held between May 22 to May 31
The district invites the community to step outside their residence from 7 to 7:10 p.m. on Thursday, May 21, and recognize all senior students during a district wide ovation.
Dallas ISD Superintendent Dr. Michael Hinojosa talked about the plans on the KRLD Afternoon News with David Rancken and Kristin Diaz.
And the Fort Worth School District has also announced it will take part in virtual graduations.
The district will hold the events in June for all 21 campuses, and students will be able to share photos of themselves in cap and gowns, as well as a personalized message as they 'move the tassel."
The school district says it will provide a link so friends and families can watch.
Superintendent Dr. Kent Scribner says while it's "profoundly disappointing" seniors won't be able to celebrate their success in person, it's the right thing to do.
