FORT WORTH (1080 KRLD) - Police in Fort Worth arrest a hit-and-run suspect -- but what makes this unique is who made the arrest. The incident happened at around 10:30 Friday morning near I-20 and Campus Drive. As ground and air units were looking for the suspect, identified as Jesus Guererro, one who just happened to be in the area at that time was none other than Police Chief Ed Kraus."Our chief was actually headed down 35(W) southbound, probably back towards our offices, when he heard this go out," says Ofc. Buddy Calzada. So Chief Kraus joined in the search."He went out there and followed that helicopter (and) was listening to the radio," says Calzada. "And I think on this one, the bad guy just may have made a wrong turn and started heading directly towards the chief."Guererro, 28, did not give up at that point."When the guy saw the police in uniform, not knowing it was the chief, (Guererro) decided to turn to run away and jump over a fence," Calzada says. "When he did that, the chief, in just doing what he does, jumped that fence as well, too."A short time later, Guererro gave up, and Kraus arrested him.Calzada says it's a classic case of leading by example."His example was going out and getting his boots muddy and uniform dirty, just like we do every day."KRLD tried getting a comment from Kraus, but Kraus was not interested in talking himself up to the media."One of the reasons that he's not available for comment is because he's just extremely humbled about this," Calzada says.Kraus, however, did release a statement."I'm just proud to be one of 1,700 officers who do this kind of work every day," Kraus said in his statement.
