DALLAS (KRLD) - A Dallas non-profit group is using a cell phone app to connect homeless people with space in shelters across the city as the temperature drops below freezing. "Our Calling" will also use its day resource center for the homeless as an overnight shelter if necessary.

"It is a moral obligation for us to keep our doors open and make sure that people have a safe place to go," said Pastor Wayne Walker with Our Calling.

The group has also developed a cell phone app to track the space available at shelters in Dallas.

"You can use it to not only find homeless service providers...but you can also let us know what areas of the city need help," said Pastor Walker. "You can identify those locations so that our teams can go out." People can also make donations using the app.

The City of Dallas is opening the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center as an overflow shelter tonight and tomorrow night as the city's regular shelters fill up. "Dallas has thousands of homeless people on the streets every night," said Pastor Walker. "The city is providing about 240 beds at the Convention Center and many of our shelter partners are already at capacity. It's wonderful the city has opened up additional spaces, but we still need many more."
