HUNTSVILLE (1080 KRLD) - A Kennedale killer has the coronavirus to thank for a stay of execution.

John Hummel was due to be executed in Huntsville tomorrow more than a decade after he murdered his pregnant wife and father-in-law and then burned down his house.

He was also suspected in the death of his five-year-old daughter but has not been tried in that case.

But now the Texas Court of Appeals has ordered a 60-day stay "in light of the current health crisis and the enormous resources needed to address that emergency."

Among the court's concerns is that coronavirus restrictions may hinder the victims' family from traveling to Huntsville to witness the execution.
