DALLAS (1080 KRLD) - A poll shows the majority of Texans support restrictions that are in place to try to slow the spread of COVID-19.

The University of Texas and Texas Tribune released the poll ahead of Governor Greg Abbott's planned announcement Monday afternoon on the next steps for the state's economy.

The poll showed 80 percent of registered voters approve of limiting gatherings to ten people or less; 77 percent agree with orders to stay home except for "essential activities."

Among registered voters, 83 percent supported closing schools and also support requirements that people traveling from other states quarantine themselves when entering Texas.

Two thirds support requiring businesses deemed "non-essential" to close.

Monday afternoon, Abbott will announce details for the next phase of reopening the Texas economy. He says the plan may include a "tiered" approach.

Abbott says he will look at each county's total number of cases, and how the county has responded. He says counties in rural areas, and counties with a "downward trajectory" in the rate of the spread of the virus may have more restrictions lifted than others.

Through Sunday, the Texas Department of State Health Services had confirmed 24,631 cases of COVID-19. A total of 648 people have died, and 10,763 were listed as recovered.

Cases have been confirmed in 204 of the state's 254 counties. Harris County, which includes Houston, has had the most with 5,729 confirmed cases.

Dallas County has had the second most with 3,014; Tarrant County has confirmed 1,947, the third most in Texas.
