TEXAS (1080 KRLD) - Texans can stock up on emergency supplies this weekend and get a break on sales taxes. The sales tax holiday covers items like household batteries, flashlights and portable generators.

State lawmakers approved the tax break on emergency supplies in 2015. This year's holiday runs from Saturday, April 25th through Monday, April 27th and was selected to give people a chance to stock up on emergency items ahead of severe weather season.

"The weather isn't going to wait," said Kevin Lyons with the Texas State Comptroller's Office. "Just because we're going through COVID the weather isn't going to say 'ok, we're going to give Texas a break until COVID's done'. These storms are coming, and so this is the time to be thinking about items you may need in case of an emergency. And we're happy to have those items as tax exempt."

Lyons says the Comptroller's Office is aware that many stores are closed because of local restrictions to prevent the spread of COVID-19, but points out there are other options for people to prepare for severe thunderstorms, tornadoes and hurricanes.

"The Comptroller is urging everyone to shop on line if they can to purchase these items. If you go into the store and purchase items, the Comptroller wants everyone to practice strict social distancing to stay safe," he said.
