ARLINGTON (1080 KRLD) - As Black History Month comes to an end, a group of Arlington 6th graders is remembering black leaders ... their own way.
Antonio Young is a teacher at Dunn Elementary School in Arlington. He says he wanted to create a way for his students to retain information about African American pioneers who are rarely talked about. So, he worked with them to create a rap called: "Our Truth, Our Treasure."
"It was my desire to help students learn about African-American pioneers beyond Dr. Martin Luther King, Rosa Parks, Malcom X," said Young. "To learn some of the great inventions that African-Americans have created...but they've kind of gone un-noticed. So as a result, it's like a treasure that has been hidden...but we're bringing it to the light."
Young worked with the class to write the song's lyrics. It features lines like: "Inside that history box, you can find a whole lot. Like the life of Benjamin Banneker, who made the first clock."
The class set the lyrics to Yo Gotti's song, "Five Star."
