DALLAS (1080 KRLD)- A new study released by the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids indicates a high number of public schools in major U.S. cities are located near tobacco retailers.
The report was authored by a team of researchers from Stanford University School of Medicine, the University of North Carolina and Washington University in St. Louis. It says more than 60% of public school campuses in the 30 cities analyzed are, on average, located within 1,000 feet of tobacco retailers. In Dallas, the figure is 44%. Researchers also say tobacco stores are much more prevalent in lower-income areas.
The Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids contends the easy access to tobacco products, along with the continued availability of "kid-friendly" flavored tobacco products, greatly increases the risk of youth nicotine addiction.
KRLD's Chris Sommer discussed the report with Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids President Matthew Myers and Stanford Senior Research Scientist Dr. Lisa Henriksen
