FORT WORTH (1080 KRLD) - It could be a long time before things return to "normal" after the coronavirus pandemic, but Tarrant County Judge Glen Whitley is laying the groundwork for the first step in that direction.

Judge Whitley is saying he might be able to loosen things up by the first or second week in May. He believes the county's hospitals and other medical infrastructure are nowhere near capacity, giving him hope the worst of the virus infections may be on the horizon.

Whitley acknowledges, even with loosening the rules, some restrictions may be necessary even after businesses re-open. Things like checking customers for a fever at the door or putting limits on the number of people allowed inside.

The current stay-home order in Tarrant County runs through April 30.  Even after the restrictions are eased, Whitley said an ongoing degree of social distancing will still be necessary.  He also said authorities will need to keep a close eye on the COVID-19 data, including infection rates and hospitalizations.
