DALLAS (KRLD) - Tony Romo as the kids would say has ‘secured the bag.’
The former Dallas Cowboys QB has agreed to a multi-year deal to remain as CBS’s number one NFL analyst.
According to Andrew Marchand of the New York Post, Romo has agreed to a new contract that will pay him $17 million annually to continue calling games with CBS.
The contract is reportedly for more than 5 years and will be worth over $100 million, by far the richest contract in sports television history for an analyst.
Romo has become a fixture along with Jim Nantz calling NFL games for CBS as has become a national sensation with his uncanny ability to correctly predict play calls before they happen. His energy, charisma, and infectious personality have made him a household name while analyzing America’s most popular sport.
According to Marchand, CBS completed the deal with Romo before he was scheduled to hit free agency next week, where it was expected for ESPN to aggressively bid for Romo’s services.
ESPN is expected to try and lure Peyton Manning to the Monday Night Football booth in an apparent attempt to shake up the current pairing Joe Tessitore and Booger McFarland.
Romo’s deal with CBS is unprecedented and transforms the landscape for sports analysts across the spectrum.
During his playing career, Romo made $127 million while playing for the Cowboys, earning $17 million or more in any one season just three times.
