FORT WORTH (1080 KRLD) - Pressure is building to get the city to oust a member of the Fort Worth human relations commission.
As of Monday evening, more than 300 people have signed a petition on Change.org, urging the Fort Worth city council to remove Mike Steele from the city's human relations commission. The campaign has a goal of 500 signatures.
Last week, Fort Worth Mayor Betsy Price demanded Steele's resignation, following the discovery of several of his Facebook posts that took aim at immigrants, Muslims and transgender people - the very people that the commission is tasked with protecting.
Steele has refused to resign; and now, the commission is holding a special meeting next Monday evening, at which they can recommend removal to the council with a two-thirds majority vote.
According to the petition, there are enough votes among councilmembers to oust Steele from the commission, should it get to that point.
The council is in recess until next month, barring the calling of a special meeting.
