DALLAS (1080 KRLD) - Senator Ted Cruz is renewing his call to use money seized from Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman to build a wall along the border with Mexico.

Sen. Cruz reintroduced a bill last month that would use the money for border security.

The U.S. Government is looking to seize $14 billion from Guzman.

Sen. Cruz called the bill the "EL CHAPO Act," short for "Ensuring Lawful Collection of Hidden Assets to Provide Order".

"Congress has a clear mandate from the American people: secure the border and build the wall,” Cruz wrote in a statement. “Ensuring the safety and security of Texans is one of my top priorities. Indeed, I have long called for building a wall as a necessary step in defending our border. Fourteen billion dollars will go a long way to secure our southern border, and hinder the illegal flow of drugs, weapons, and individuals."

After Guzman's conviction, Cruz called on Congress to take "swift action" to pass the measure, calling the bill, "crucial legislation."

Cruz says the federal government should leverage asset forfeitures from Guzman and other "murderous drug lords" to offset the cost of securing the border.

The Trump Administration has called for $5.7 billion in funding for a barrier. Congressional leaders say they have agreed to $1.4 billion for border security to avoid another government shutdown. The measure would allow construction of 55 miles of fencing along the Rio Grande in South Texas and advanced screening at customs offices and border crossings.
