Stores at Allen Premium Outlets started reopening Wednesday for the first time since the shooting there May 6. That Saturday, police say a gunman shot and killed eight people before an Allen Police officer shot and killed him.
Simon Property Group, the owner of the mall, says each store is choosing when to open, so not all opened Wednesday.
For those that did, Allen Premium Outlets had a more visible security presence with private security guards walking the sidewalks and Allen Police regularly circling the parking lots.
"I know there are police officers around, watching what happens, just coming out and protecting the people," one man who had come to buy shoes said.
"I'm glad they're here protecting the citizens who are still wanting to get out here and shop," a woman visiting with her husband said.
She said they live in Lake Charles, Louisiana and were staying with relatives for a long Memorial Day weekend. She said they initially came to shop on Monday and found it was still closed.
"I'm so glad it's back open and things are back to normal, hopefully," she said. "It's not bothering me. You can't live in fear."
A church brought therapy dogs to some of the stores. People shopping said they appreciate the work to make customers feel safe while still making them feel welcome.
"It always used to be so peaceful, but now, nobody knows what will happen," one man shopping with his kids said. "Anything can happen out of nowhere."
People had left cards, stuffed animals and balloons at a makeshift memorial outside the outlets. Those items were taken to a church to be shared with victims' families.
Simon Property Group is planning a permanent memorial at Allen Premium Outlets to remember the victims and also "commemorate the enduring strength of the Allen community."
