Bell Textron has successfully delivered a package to a neighborhood in Denton County using an un-manned aerial drone.
Company officials say it's an important step to show the commercial applications of the technology.
The all-electric drone is a vertical takeoff and landing vehicle, which means it can take off like a helicopter but then fly like a plane. Bell calls it the "Autonomous Pod Transport". It can carry payloads of 70 pounds and travel up to 100 miles per hour.
The recent test route went through different types of controlled airspace around Alliance Airport.
The flight path was mostly over un-populated areas, but the drone did pass near I-35-W and Texas Motor Speedway.
It landed at a site in the Pecan Square master-planned neighborhood in Northlake in Denton County. The drone reached a maximum altitude of 300 feet.
Data collected during the flight will be used to help develop federal standards for un-manned aerial delivery drones.
