SMU's bold move to join the ACC is paying dividends as the Mustangs eye a potential spot in the College Football Playoff.
Last year, SMU announced it had raised $159 million to secure ACC membership, agreeing to forgo nine years of television revenue as part of the deal. Now, under third-year head coach Rhett Lashlee, the program is seeing the benefits of the national attention that comes with its football success.
"It was the vision for the university," he said. "The whole point of getting into the ACC wasn't just for athletics. It enhances the profile of our entire university. In 2024, that's what college football, and to some degree college basketball, does for your university."
The Mustangs face a crucial matchup against Clemson this Saturday. A win would guarantee them a place in the College Football Playoff.
