A North Texas couple combined their passions to fill a need and give people with special needs special opportunities. They're this week’s KRLD Difference Makers.
When Leah and Levi Dubrawsky moved to Dallas, they noticed something was missing.
“I had a lot of experience working with people with disabilities. I grew up in a very inclusive school, so we had kids with disabilities in our classes. It’s just the way I grew up and I really wanted to see that in Dallas as well,” Leah said.
That's when she and her husband created a non-profit called Friendship Circle.
“We run a non-profit for kids and adults with special needs. We do social activities that are inclusive,” Leah said. “It’s really a way of creating friendships for people of all abilities throughout Dallas.”
At the same Levi was brushing up on baking, making kosher sourdough bread for his friends and family.
“My husband has always been a sourdough baker. There’s no place to buy kosher sourdough in Dallas,” Leah said. People began pressing Levi to sell his sourdough bread because it was so good. Levi was hesitant at first until the couple decided to marry their passions, breaking bread and being inclusive.
“We decided to roll with a pop-up idea and we started selling sandwiches like a real, authentic deli and we had our adults with special needs be the employees,” Leah said. “They were so excited.”
We're proud to call Friendship Circle and Sour on Dallas this week's KRLD Difference Makers.
“It’s like a really unbelievable feeling because as much as it’s nice to have a market, there’s a market for selling sourdough bread,” Leah said. “I think that what’s even greater than that is an opportunity to help someone that is 18 years old, 19 years old, have his first experience of a job. And I think that that is even more rewarding.”
