A company has cut the ribbon on a data center in Irving that aims to limit water and electricity use. Edged U.S. opened the 169,000-square-foot center this week.
Chief Executive Bryant Farland says the company rebuilt a vacant building into a "thriving digital hub."
"With parts of Texas, like the rest of the country, facing continued droughts and power constraints, we believe this is the right thing to do," Farland says. "We believe the right thing to do is to do well by doing good."
Edged Dallas says the center is "optimized for both water and energy conservation." Farland says the center will not use water for cooling, saving 95 million gallons a year.
"This is particularly important in a community like Irving where water is a previous resource," he says.
Edged says the project will also save the amount of electricity used to power 7,500 homes. The data center uses energy efficient equipment and is equipped with solar panels.
As the Texas population grows along with the demand for technologies like artificial intelligence, Irving Mayor Rick Stopfer says the data center can help keep the region's economy growing.
"Projects like Edged support the growth of our city and region by not only meeting the needs of existing companies but by attracting new companies needing the data infrastructure Edged provides," Stopfer says.
Stopfer says companies like Edged will choose to set up in cities that can provide the skilled workforce needed, so the relationship can help both the private sector grow while avoiding strain on local infrastructure.
"As demand grows, it is critical we have partners like Edged who are mindful of the resources data centers require and are dedicated to providing sustainable solutions," he says.
Farland says the solar panels and design will save $70 million in energy expenses over the facility's lifetime and "virtually eliminate direct air emissions."
