COVID-19 numbers show slight increase across North Texas, pandemic not over yet

While the number of new cases remains fairly low, officials say the pandemic is not yet over and medical experts are reminding people to continue to wear masks and social distance to stay safe.

Too many people in North Texas are missing their COVID-19 vaccine appointments, and now fewer people are signing up to get a shot even though all Texans age 16-years and older are now eligible for a vaccine.

Dr. Paul Klotman, president and CEO of the Baylor College of Medicine says the curve isn't sloping down. He says if we keep wearing masks, get vaccinated and stay out of crowds, we'd be done with this by summer.

He says we're tracking towards the worst case scenario with cases rising with more contagious variants, specifically the b117 form of COVID-19 from the UK.

Dr. Klotman says we're now in a plateau, and every time we hit one we tend to have a surge afterwards.

On Tuesday, Dallas County reported 376 new coronavirus cases and 20 deaths.

Tarrant county reported 580 new cases and 10 deaths.

Denton County confirmed 161 new cases and 3 deaths.

175 new cases were reported in Collin County and 2 deaths.

The hospitalization rate in the DFW area remains low at 3.7 percent.

And getting the vaccine in Dallas is getting a lot easier starting today.

A drive-thru vaccination site at Ellis Davis Field House in Dallas will start vaccinating people without and appointment today. Officials say you just have to show up.

The clinic is open from 11:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. Monday thru Saturday.
