Dallas Animal Services is inviting the public to help shelter pets cope with New Year’s Eve stress during a late-night event designed to provide calm and comfort as fireworks and celebrations ramp up across the city.
The free event, called Calming the Canines, runs from 10:30 p.m. to 1:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Dallas Animal Services shelter on North Westmoreland Road.
The shelter says loud noises and increased activity surrounding New Year’s Eve can be especially stressful for animals. During the event, participants are encouraged to quietly sit with dogs and other pets by reading, listening to music, or simply offering a calm presence inside the shelter.
Organizers say no special training is required to participate. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own lawn chairs or yoga mats for seating, and treats for the animals are welcome. Parking at the shelter is limited, and Dallas Animal Services recommends arriving early or carpooling.
Those with questions about the event can contact Dallas Animal Services’ volunteer team by email here - DASvolunteer@dallas.gov.
