A Dallas ISD police officer who was shot in the leg near a Walmart in Northeast Dallas last week was wounded with his own service weapon after a suspect managed to grab it during a physical struggle, according to police.
Officer Justin Jones remains in stable condition at a local hospital and is expected to recover, school district officials confirmed. The incident occurred during an attempted arrest near a Walmart off Forest Lane and Interstate 635, where the officer encountered a suspicious individual while on patrol.
According to the Dallas Police Department, which is leading the criminal investigation, a confrontation escalated when the suspect physically resisted arrest. During the struggle, the suspect gained control of the officer's department-issued handgun and fired a single shot, striking the officer in the leg. Additional responding officers quickly arrived on the scene, disarmed the suspect, and took him into custody without further incident.
The suspect was transported to the Dallas County Jail and faces multiple felony charges, including aggravated assault on a public servant. Authorities confirmed no shoppers or bystanders were injured during the altercation.
Dallas ISD Police Chief Albert Martinez stated that the department is reviewing standard arrest and officer safety protocols following the shooting.
