The mayor says he doesn't get a say.
The city manager hires the chief in Dallas and mayor Eric Johnson says he can only "voice his opinion". He has concerns about the hiring process in general.
He wants more public opinion and believes the safety committee needs to be involved.
"I want a chief who takes the rising crime rate in the city, personally," he says.
The city has put out a survey about what the public would like to see in a new police chief, but Johnson says that's not enough.
Chief Renee Hall, plans to leave at the end of the year.
