Registration has opened for the Dallas Mayor's Back to School Fair. This year's event will take place Friday, August 5 at Fair Park.

"We have a role to play in keeping our kids safe and making sure our kids are learning, staying engaged and preparing all of you for very, very bright futures," said Mayor Eric Johnson.

Johnson said the event can set kids from lower income households up for success.

"I'm a living testament, I'm a living witness to what an education can do to help change someone's life," he said. Johnson grew up in a low income neighborhood in West Dallas, ultimately graduating from Harvard. Before becoming mayor, he served four terms in the Texas House.

"We don't have an achievement gap. We have opportunity gaps," says incoming Dallas ISD Superintendent Stephanie Elizalde, saying the back to school fair can help close opportunity gaps.

The past two years, Dallas has held a drive through event, giving out supplies but limiting other services. This August, other services, including medical and dental check-ups, will resume.

"This back to school fair has become a critical part of every school year here in the City of Dallas," Johnson said.

Families must meet income guidelines and register by July 29. Details are available here.
