If you'd like to help spread some holiday cheer for some needy veterans, a local nonprofit could use your help on Friday.

Soldiers' Angels is holding a food distribution event in Dallas that day for 150 pre-registered veteran and military families.

This is something that the nonprofit does every month in Dallas; but this month, each client will get something extra.

"This month, of course, is our holiday distribution," notes Amy Palmer, Soldiers' Angels president and CEO. "So we're going to be giving each client a ham, as well as the regular food that they're going to be getting that we give every month."

According to the V-A, there are 100-thousand veterans in Dallas County, and veterans have a much higher rate of food insecurity compared to civilians.

"We match up to the VA's data to look at where food insecurity was the highest among veterans, and Dallas is in the top 10," says Palmer.

The program started in 2015 in San Antonio; and along with Dallas, it's expanded to Atlanta, Charleston, Denver, Detroit and Orlando.

The normal food allotment consists of fresh fruits and vegetables, meats and non-perishable food items.

"We'll be receiving about 15,000 pounds of food on Friday," Palmer says.

With that much food to sort out, Palmer says they can really use volunteers to sort and hand out the food.

"They'll get to help sort food, load food, speak to veterans and families," says Palmer; "and with it being a holiday month, it's really extra special, and the veterans really love it."

The event Friday runs from 10:00 a.m.-2:30 p.m. at Holy Cross Catholic Church, 5004 Bonnie View Rd., Dallas.

"We need the majority of the volunteers right at the start, so 10:00 to 12:00, and then little bit less will we get into 12:00 to 2:30," Palmer says.

The event is sponsored by Lockheed Martin, in partnership with the North Texas Food Bank.
