Dallas is deploying new AI-powered cameras on sanitation trucks to automatically flag code violations such as illegal dumping, graffiti and overgrown lots as crews move through neighborhoods.

The technology is part of a nearly $2.6 million, three-year contract approved by the City Council to expand the city’s ability to identify problem areas.

The cameras capture street-level images as trucks run their normal routes, allowing software to detect potential violations and send them to city staff for review. Officials say the system is designed to help inspectors focus on more complex cases while improving response times across the city.

The program is not intended for public surveillance, and city leaders say the cameras will only be used to identify specific code issues visible from the street. Several other large cities have adopted similar tools in recent years as part of broader efforts to modernize code enforcement.

Dallas expects the technology to begin operating on select routes in the coming weeks, with full rollout anticipated next year. The system will expand the city’s ability to document violations in real time and could lead to faster cleanup and enforcement efforts across residential and commercial areas.
