The Dallas City Council's Quality of Life Committee will meet today to discuss a proposed new city ordinance.
The measure would prevent people from feeding wild animals, including coyotes. A child was attacked by a coyote last month in Dallas.
"Coyotes normally do not want to interact with us. That's a good thing that they're fearful of us," said Sam Kieschnick, an Urban Wildlife Biologist with the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. "Please don't feed the coyotes."
The ordinance being reviewed today would establish penalties if someone causes more than ten adult animals to congregate in one location at the same time or who socializes wildlife to humans. It would target specific behaviors such as leaving food or scraps out for wild animals, deliberately feeding stray cats, or over-filling bird feeders.
