Dangerous road in Denton soon to be reconfigured

An extremely dangerous road in Denton that has been the site of many fatal crashes will soon be reconfigured.

If you've ever had the displeasure of driving along the western portion of Hickory Creek Road in Denton, you know how extremely treacherous it is. Between Country Club Road and Riverpass Drive, in both directions, there is a 90-degree curve in which you cannot see oncoming traffic until the very last second.

In another few years, that will all change after the Denton City Council approved a plan to widen the roadway from two lanes to four lanes and to build a bridge that connects Hickory Creek Road to Hilltop Road, completely bypassing that 90-degree curve.

DeAnna Cody, Denton's deputy director of real estate, says that will involve the city purchasing 11 parcels of private undeveloped land.

"This item also authorizes eminent domain if the consultants are unable to reach [an] agreement on the purchase price," Cody said.

The $54 million project will be paid for through the city's 2019 bond program. When it's completed around mid-year 2024, Hickory Creek Road will be gated for emergency access at that 90-degree curve.
