The founder of the Deep Ellum Arts Festival in Dallas says this year's event in April will be the last. Festival owner Stephen Millard has posted a message on-line saying that he's not in a financial position to put on the event next year.

The street festival started in 1994 as a place for artists to show and sell their work. It also featured performances from a wide variety of musicians. Millard says changing marketplace conditions have forced him to shut down the festival.

"With the current economic conditions, along with security concerns affecting all major public events, producing a free-to-attend art and music festival in Deep Ellum has become too costly and arduous to continue," he said.

While he said the event in April of 2022 did manage to meet all of its financial responsibilities, "we did not generate enough reserves to finance another production in 2023."
