Delivery Drivers Rescue Abandoned Newborn Baby Boy

COPPELL (1080 KRLD) - An abandoned newborn baby boy is doing well, thanks to a pair of fast-thinking delivery drivers.

Coppell Police Ofc. Paul Gonzales says the drivers noticed something troubling last Thursday afternoon at the intersection of Sandy Lake Road and Freeport Parkway.

"The reporting person had advised that they had found an infant in a car seat near a tree there near the roadway," says Ofc. Gonzales. "There were several blankets that the child was wrapped up in. I don't believe that the delivery guys could actually tell until they went up and unwrapped the blankets that there was actually an infant in the car seat."

Even though the baby was wrapped up in blankets, the mid-40s temperatures of that afternoon made timing of the essence.

The baby was rushed to Baylor Medical Center of Grapevine.

"The baby is in good shape, in good condition, healthy and is in the care of Child Protective Services," Ofc. Gonzales says.

The following day, police arrested the baby boy's mother, Nicole Ndumbi.

"She was charged with abandoning/endangering a child, which is a second degree felony," says Ofc. Gonzales.

Gonzales says under the Baby Moses Law, Ndumbi did not have to do what he says she did.

"You could take an infant up to 60 days to a EMS, fire (station), hospital, some type of medical type service like that," he says. "No questions are asked, other than some basic medical questions."
