Difference Maker helps children with special needs live life to the fullest

Children with special needs and their families are living their lives to the fullest with the help of a North Texas organization. It's this week's KRLD Difference Maker.

It started as a way to help babies and mother's with HIV but has transformed into something so much more.

"Over time it was a natural fit for us to pivot and work cases of children with special medical, education, health and domestic needs," said Abigail Erickson-Torres, CEO of Bryan's House. "So children that Down Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy, heart conditions, lung conditions, breathing conditions, they need to be fed from a G-tube or have special dietary restrictions, They are all in these classes together and they leave the class everyday on our campus and go to their therapy programs."

But it's a holistic approach to care so their parents or caregivers also get case management and help with everyday needs. With the help from educators, case managers, and therapists from Bryan's House, children with special needs and their families are able to live more independent lives.

"There are about 100,000 children between the ages of 0-14 that are needing access to services. And the earlier we can do it, the better for the whole economy and the community because the children are really having their trajectories changed for life," Erickson-Torres said.

For Erickson-Torres seeing lives change for the positive is priceless.

We're proud to call Bryan's House this week's KRLD Difference Maker.
