GARLAND (1080 KRLD)- There is new information from Garland police on the arrest made in a 37-year-old cold case.

It was November of 1986 when police got a disturbance call and found the body of Barbara Fay Villareal. She had been stabbed multiple times. Police were able to collect the suspect's blood as evidence, but the case turned cold.

Officers continued to work on the case and used new technology including DNA genealogy. That led them to the victim's brother-in-law, her husband's brother - Liborio Canales.

He's 85 now and living in Lovington, New Mexico. Detectives questioned him and he admitted to the murder -- saying he was upset with Barbara because of some sort of family dispute. Liborio is charged with murder and has a one-million-dollar bond.

He will be extradited brought back to North Texas, and taken to the Dallas County Jail.

The police department says it's thankful for the help they received from other agencies, and can now bring closure for the victim's family.
