Some community markets expecting an overflow of demand if SNAP benefits lapse this weekend are already dealing with an uptick in activity.

The Market at Frisco Family Services is seeing an unprecedented surge in need.

Executive Director Nicole Bursey says it started in August and went from there.

"When the shutdown occurred, we began to see more increase," Bursey said. "We're seeing about a 21% increase in the number of folks using our Market."

She says one of the biggest challenges for them is that more than half of SNAP recipients are either children or senior citizens.

"About 58 percent of those that are using SNAP are vulnerable," she said.

Bursey says they have been actively communicating with the community in order to get donations to provide food assistance to those who need it.
