Tarrant Area Food Bank and North Texas Food Bank are preparing events to give out food to families who cannot afford a Thanksgiving meal.
North Texas Food Bank will host a distribution Saturday from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at UNT Dallas:
7300 University Hills Blvd.
Dallas, TX 75241
The food bank will have meals for 8,000 families.
"There will be chickens this year because of supply chain issues with the turkeys, but our donor was able to acquire some chickens," says North Texas Food Bank Chief Executive Trisha Cunningham.
In addition to chickens, each car can receive a 25-pound box of food and a 17-pound box of produce.
"Hopefully, that will be able to ensure all families in our community have a wonderful, nutritious holiday meal," Cunningham says.
Cunningham says demand on North Texas Food Bank has dropped from the peak of the pandemic, but the food bank did give out 30% more food in September of 2021 than in September 2019. She says demand also increased 6% in September from August.
"Over the past three or four months, we've actually seen an increase in demand, and we expect that to continue at least through the holidays," she says. "Whenever government programs come into play, demand will drop a bit, but then it starts creeping back up."
