The U.S. Postal Service is raising the price of Forever stamps to 82 cents each, up from 78 cents, effective this Sunday, July 12. The increase is part of a broader 4.8 percent rate hike across mailing services aimed at addressing rising operational costs and declining mail volume.

A book of 20 Forever stamps will now cost $16.40, compared to the current $15.60. Other changes include first-class metered letters rising from 74 cents to 78 cents, domestic postcards from 61 cents to 65 cents, and international postcards and letters from $1.70 to $1.75.

Forever stamps, introduced in 2007, continue to cover the cost of a one-ounce First-Class letter regardless of future price increases. Stamps purchased before the hike remain valid indefinitely.

The Postal Service described the adjustments as necessary amid a “severe financial crisis.” Officials noted the changes will help sustain universal service obligations while managing challenges like increased fuel and labor costs alongside falling mail volumes.

The rate increases were proposed in April, reviewed and approved by the Postal Regulatory Commission in May, and will take effect July 12. This marks the latest in a series of incremental hikes, with the Forever stamp price having risen from 73 cents in July 2024 to 78 cents last year.

The Postal Service emphasized that the hikes are modest relative to inflation and other service costs. Customers are encouraged to stock up on current Forever stamps before the weekend change if planning frequent mailings.
