Several communities across Texas are getting money from a state program designed to improve the value of military bases and prevent them from being closed.

The state is awarding $15.3 million from the Texas Military Preparedness Commission's Defense Economic Adjustment Assistance Grant program.
"Support for our military communities and the jobs they create is vital to continue expanding opportunity for hardworking Texans across the state," said Governor Greg Abbott.
Fort Worth is receiving $1.9 million to help with the renovation of the Military Family Advocacy Resource Center at the Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base. Abilene is receiving $375,000 for 5G wireless service and the expansion of fiber-optic cable at Dyess Air Force Base. San Antonio, Temple, Corpus Christi and Val Verde County are also receiving funds through the grant program.
"Not only are the 15 major military installations and Army Futures Command in Texas critical to our nation's defense, they also add over $123 billion to the state's economy and support, directly and indirectly, more than 633,000 jobs in communities across this great state," Gov. Abbott said.
