Fort Worth Police updated the events of what led to an officer-involved shooting last week.

Police Chief Eddie Garcia says officers encountered 33-year-old Alejandro Serano who was firing a gun along Bonita Drive Wednesday night.

The officers commanded Serano to drop the weapon.

Instead he walked toward the officer with the gun still in his hand.

An officer fired and hit Serano several times.

"The suspect had a second firearm that was holstered," Chief Garcia said. "That is common practice. You are handcuffed first and then given medical aid."

Serano is still alive and his condition has stabilized.

Serano is charged with aggravated assault of a public servant and deadly conduct.

Garcia said Serano had fired about 30 rounds in the neighborhood before police took him down.

"Whatever reason this individual had for putting a neighborhood at risk, I don't know," Chief Garcia said. "Gunfire in our neighborhoods is not random nor do we see it as celebratory. My men and women see it as a violent crime."
